It comes the big H shop, who are doing an increasingly great job of providing actual value to their massive base. By contrast, its case back is (very) hand-engraved with the letters ‘JAM’. All printing is still undegraded and beautifully clear. Its tritium application has aged with UV exposure to a deep even cream.

This example has a full case, with solid lugs. Surprisingly, these are still something of a value as well. An enthusiast’s chronograph in the extreme. If there were ever a watch with historic merit that rewarded a little effortful research, it is this. Moreover, it has the broad-arrow handset. While the pinnacle collector’s watch would probably have to be the Chronomaster with a Valjoux 23 column wheel, this Valjoux 92 is no consolation and a dependable workhorse in its own right. Croton had previously been a distributor, but then began getting dials manufactured by others with their own insignia.
The Chronomaster was produced by Nivada, but those intended for the US market were marked Croton. That event solidified Nivada Croton’s name in rugged dependable tool watches. They did so with Nivada Crotons on their wrist, which kept running time perfectly throughout the whole ordeal. That crew slowly had to make their way back to Okuma in the punishing Antarctic. On the crew’s surveying, a VX-6 UC-1 Otter crash-landed. This small crew built a landing strip that allowed survey of the entire continent. Byrd with a six-ship flotilla explored the Antarctic Ross Sea with the aim of establishing a research station. You see, in 1955 a Naval expedition led by Admiral R. However, there are few as desirable as this example with its Valjoux 92, broad arrow, tachymetre dial, fully graduated bezel, and red five-minute subdial counter.īy early 60s, The Nivada Croton Chronomaster had made a name for itself. Its production spanned differing dials, cases, register counts, and even calibres throughout its run from 1963 until 1978. Unrecognized not for its merit, but unrecognized in the sheer degree of depth and comparably vast scholarship that surrounds this still-attainable chronograph. The watch was supplied to us by the original owner, a US Navy Pilot, who was given it for his 16th Birthday and it then spent much of its life in a safe as he was also given an Ed White Speedmaster when he was 22, that said the watch served him from 16 until he was 22.The Chronomaster is not only handsome, but may perhaps be one of the best examples ever of unrecognized depth within a single reference. The watch is in stunning original condition, it has never been refinished and is just a perfect combination of vintage cool without showing excessive patina.
This watch has the true pedigree of an explorers extremely high quality divers chronograph, further demonstrated by the manufactures choice of movement ,the highly regarded mechanical winding valjoux 23, one of the most famous chronograph movements of all time, it is cased in a 39 mm (excluding the crown) solid stainless steel screw back case. The various names were due to a legal battle with Movado over similar sounding names so Nivada had to change title and the simplest method was to add Grenchen -its home town or the name of its distributor Croton. Seen under the Name Nivada ,Nivada Grenchen and in this configuration Croton. This was proven by the fact that whilst Rolex was heading up Everest and Jaeger boarded the USS Nautilus nuclear submarine on its journey under the North Pole, Nivada made the watch that accompanied the expedition to explore the Antarctic in 1957. Nivada are a watch manufacturer who in their hey day rivalled Rolex ,Jaeger le Coultre and any other “top brand ” for adventurers watches. This is a remarkable Croton Chronomaster manufactured by Nivada Grenchen for their USA market under the Croton brand.
